I've been a fan of Chris James' writing for some time, and I read Time is the Only God with a great deal of enjoyment. It's a fast paced, science fiction story set in a multiverse where Reality One, the universe of the main character Kane Hunter, is just one of squillions of possible dimensions. As a dimensionologist based at the CERN facility in Switzerland, Kane Hunter gets to travel to these alternate dimensions to see how history turns out when some small difference sends events hurtling off in a different direction.But Reality One is not the most technologically advanced reality, and Kane Hunter finds that he is not the only dimensionologist travelling through the multiverse. Meanwhile, back in CERN, international politics is threatening to shut the facility down for good.
There are many threads woven into this story, and I'm pleased to say that Kane Hunter gets a lot of help from some strong, female characters, none of whom is a love interest! Sadly, that's all I can say without spoiling the plot.
One thing I can say though, is that Time is the Only God gives me hope that some of the questions left unanswered from Repulse, the author's history of a future war, may be answered eventually. There is no mention made of Repulse in this book, but the motif of time travel would explain how the manuscript ended up in our time. This is all just conjecture on my part, but I hope I'm right.
Time is the Only God is a rip roaring, standalone yarn that takes you into a universe of almost limitless possibilities. I highly recommend it to all science fiction fans, especially those who love delving into our own history.

Ever thought that there’s more going on in CERN than CERN is admitting? Here’s the proof underneath CERN is a top-secret facility which sends ‘dimensionologists’ out into the continuum to study how history turned out differently in the pasts of different futures. But our hero, Kane, soon finds himself in all kinds of trouble. There is one particular fellow who turns up on each of Kane’s trips to these ‘alternates’, and it quickly becomes very tense (not to mention complex) as the confrontation between the two of them expands to cover millions of universes.
This is a story with a great deal of charm. There are plenty of heart-stopping set pieces and although complicated, the plot makes much more sense than a lot of the other time travel stories I’ve read. My only criticism is that the hero, Kane, while being likable enough, does seem to come across a little flat. It stands to reason that CERN is hardly going to select James Bond types for these kinds of missions, but I think Kane could’ve done with a bit more colour. Apart from that, virtually all other aspects of the story, but especially the time travel, are done very convincingly, so if you like time travel stories, you should enjoy this.
Time travel has interested me since I first read, many years ago, HG Wells’s The Time Machine. But it wasn’t until I read this gripping novel by Chris James that I’ve read a story which could and does face the unique challenges of that travel. Time is the Only God is respectful of the much-hyped, undeniable ‘grandfather paradox’, and the novel considers and thoughtfully addresses the paradox with multiple realities in multiple dimensions a brilliant solution!
Chris James is an intelligent writer. Scenes provide readers with just enough detail to fill our imaginations, realistic dialogue (real for whatever timeframe, whatever history, in which the main character finds himself) moves the story along as much as the fast-paced action and conflict do. The science is both believable/current and fantastical/futuristic. The characters are well chosen. In other words, the writing is beautifully woven into an intelligent page-turner.
An all-around engaging novel and satisfying alternate reality read. You’ll be hooked from the first pages.
