What an amazing book! Written in 1838 it is a crisp, colourful account of life in India at that time, told by the sister of the Governor General George Eden. Although at the top of the social hierarchy their lives were by no means comfortable. Much of the time was spent travelling around India on bad roads, through dust storms and monsoons, on elephants, horseback and carried in palanquins, sleeping in wet tents at night while visiting rajahs by day. This author also wrote 'The Semi Detached House,' a delightful tale in the style of Jane Austin.Product details

Emily Eden's letters to her sister paint a vivid picture of life for the British officials and their families who worked in India during the mid 1800s. If you are interested in the period and in the way upper-class Victorian families coped with the heat, lack of comfortable housing, and trained servants, you probably will enjoy the book as I did. But it moves slowly and there is no plot line to follow--just an account of day-by-day life for the ex-pats in India. Its major interest will be for scholars rather than for the general reader.
