Exquisite, sensuous stories by one of the greatest French prose writers, rendered into idiomatic English by one of the masters of the language.

"To a lover of the exquisite in literature there is nothing more beautiful than that which was given the literary world by Theophile Gautier, and we could wish that he had written more voluminously. Whether or not his writings are obscene depends on the breadth of view of the reader. It seems to us that the seeker after the questionable would hardly look for it in such artistic gems." -Atlanta Journal-record of Medicine

"Delightful reading." -The Present Age

"Powerful stories of the supernatural with Egypt for their background." -St. Louis Public Library Monthly Bulletin

"Outside of this journalistic wear and tear Lafcadio Hearn devoted his time to the study of the French Romantic school....Hours stolen from sleep would be given to the transliteration of Theophile Gautier, whose works, replete with the fantastic and bizarre, were his daily diet. Poor eyesight could not deter his purpose, no more than a poor purse could prevent the buying of dictionaries and thesauri. And it will be remembered that his maiden volume contained inimitable translations of six tales by Gautier, under the general title of 'One of Cleopatra's Nights." -Library of Southern Literature

"Much of the music in Gautier's language is untranslatable and there are many difficulties in the way of him who attempts to render in another language the subtle shades of meaning, the plasticity of expression and the studies in form and contour of this most delicate of all literary artists; and that Mr. Hearn has succeeded almost in compassing the impossible is no light achievement." -New York Sun

"Perhaps it needs no word here to emphasize one phase of Gautier's nature - he knew himself to be a beauty-lover, and he knew all the limitations of character that this cult rendered inevitable. A second force in Gautier's life is his orientalism. In this he was not only conscious of the strain of eastern blood that pulsed through both body and temperament, but he was, by reason of long application, constant travel, and the varied opportunities of a critic's life, a savant on matters oriental, particularly Pompeian and Egyptian. Here again, 'The Romance of a Mummy,' a long tale, "One of Cleopatra's Nights,' a short tale, and 'The Mummy's Foot,' display the savant in his work. The movement of life in ancient Egypt in the time of the Hebrew bondage, and all that highly colored, picturesque civilization, afford him the always coveted background which he valued as much for itself as for its use as a setting." -Lippincott's Monthly Magazine

American author Robert W. Chambers was likely inspired by Gautier's short story "Arria Marcella" when he wrote his horror masterpiece "The King in Yellow" in 1895. "Arria Marcella" is set amid the ruins of Pompeii sometime in the 1850s and is a shockingly modern time travel romance for it's time. (Chambers likely based his story "The Damoiselle D'Ys" on the story found in this book)..

Prose written like golden poetry
Amazingly talented author !
excellent book highly recommended
The format was one I wasn't prepared for, but once you actually start reading, if you have any taste for Decadent literature, Romanticism, Aestheticism, or even just beautiful reads, this will command your attention.

It was wonderful. I loved it. I've never seen such dense lyricism in fiction all my life.
